Akshaj Khandelwal, a 3-year-old boy from Delhi, India, was born with a rare condition known as Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS), affecting only 1 in 100,000 people, rendering him unable to walk normally. When Akshaj attempts to take a few steps, his feet start bleeding. Due to his condition, he cannot attend school unaccompanied. Nevertheless, Akshaj remains unaware of his illness, believing his enlarged leg to be a special gift that will empower him to become a superhero, considering himself fortunate to possess it.

Unfortunately, people often discriminate against and maintain distance from him due to fear of contagion. Concerns about potential bullying weigh heavily on his family as he grows up and prepares to attend school.

Akshaj’s father, Mr. Khandelwal, feels his son is too young to comprehend the harsh reality of his condition, particularly as there is no cure. He states, “My son is oblivious to his ailment. We don’t want to burden him with negativity. He perceives his oversized leg as a superhero’s asset. He’s too young to grasp his challenges. We’re confident he can overcome them positively.”

Despite their efforts, the Khandelwals have found little assistance after visiting numerous hospitals in New Delhi. Physicians at Fortis Hospital express uncertainty regarding treatment possibilities, stating that successful intervention for KTS is unlikely. This genetic disorder affects the development of blood vessels, soft tissue, and bones.

Dr. Krishan Chugh, head of pediatrics, explains, “KTS is a vascular anomaly where veins aren’t properly formed, primarily affecting children. Akshaj experiences intestinal bleeding due to compromised blood supply, indicating abnormal vein development.” Akshaj’s parents remain resolute in their quest for a cure but acknowledge the anguish of witnessing their son’s suffering.

Shruti, Akshaj’s mother, laments, “We’ve consulted numerous doctors in Delhi, yet treatment remains elusive. His health deteriorates, his leg enlarges, and it breaks my heart.”
